Early Life and Marriage

Dolley Madison was born Mary Todd on May 20, 1768, in Guilford County, North Carolina. Her father was a wealthy planter, and she received a good education. She was married to John Todd, a lawyer, in 1790. Todd died in 1793, and Dolley was left with two young sons.

In 1794, Dolley married James Madison, a Virginia congressman. Madison was a widower, and he had two children from his first marriage. Dolley and James had no children together.

First Lady

James Madison was elected President of the United States in 1808. Dolley Madison became the First Lady, and she quickly became one of the most popular First Ladies in American history. She was a gracious hostess, and she entertained guests from all over the world. She was also a strong supporter of the arts and education.

In 1814, the British invaded Washington, D.C., and Dolley Madison was forced to flee the White House. She took with her the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and other important documents.

After the war, Dolley Madison returned to Washington, D.C., and she continued to serve as First Lady until her husband's term ended in 1817.

Later Life

After James Madison's presidency ended, Dolley and James retired to Montpelier, their estate in Virginia. Dolley Madison continued to be active in society, and she was a supporter of many charitable causes. She died on July 12, 1849, at the age of 81.

Legacy

Dolley Madison was one of the most popular First Ladies in American history. She was a charming and gracious hostess, and she played an important role in her husband's presidency. She was also a strong supporter of the arts and education, and she helped to establish the Smithsonian Institution.
