Early Life and Military Service
Harold Jorgen Skaarup was born on October 12, 1917, in Viborg, Denmark. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1928 and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1940, he enlisted in the Canadian Army and was assigned to the 5th Armoured Regiment.
The 5th Armoured Regiment was a tank regiment that fought in the Italian Campaign. Skaarup served as a tank driver and gunner. He was involved in some of the most intense fighting of the campaign, including the Battle of Monte Cassino.
Heroism at Ortona
Skaarup's most famous act of heroism occurred during the Battle of Ortona in December 1943. The 5th Armoured Regiment was tasked with clearing the town of German forces. Skaarup's tank was one of the first to enter Ortona.
As Skaarup's tank approached the town square, it came under heavy fire from German anti-tank guns. Skaarup's tank was hit several times, but he refused to retreat. He continued to fire at the German positions, allowing the rest of the regiment to advance.
Skaarup's actions helped to secure the town square, which was a key objective in the battle. For his bravery, he was awarded the Military Medal.
Later Service
After the Battle of Ortona, Skaarup continued to serve with the 5th Armoured Regiment. He participated in the liberation of Rome and the advance through northern Italy. In 1945, he was transferred to the 8th Princess Louise, a reconnaissance regiment.
Skaarup was honourably discharged from the army in 1946. He returned to Canada and worked as a mechanic. He remained active in the military community and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
