On August 24, 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Till was brutally murdered in Money, Mississippi. Till, who was from Chicago, was visiting his relatives in Mississippi when he was accused of whistling at a white woman named Carolyn Bryant. Bryant's husband, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother, J.W. Milam, kidnapped Till, tortured him, and then shot him in the head. Till's body was found in the Tallahatchie River three days later.
The murder of Emmett Till shocked the nation and helped to galvanize the civil rights movement. Till's mother, Mamie Till Mobley, insisted on having an open casket funeral for her son so that the world could see the brutality of his murder. Till's death became a symbol of the racism and violence that black people faced in the Jim Crow South.
In 2017, Dave Tell published Remembering Emmett Till, a powerful and moving account of Till's murder and its lasting impact on the civil rights movement. Tell, a veteran journalist, spent years interviewing Till's family, friends, and witnesses to the crime. He also pored over court documents and other historical records to piece together a comprehensive and nuanced account of Till's life and death.
Remembering Emmett Till is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the history of the civil rights movement and the ongoing struggle for racial justice in America. Tell's book is a powerful reminder of the brutality and racism that black people have faced throughout history, and it is a testament to the resilience and courage of those who have fought for justice.
