Can Democracy Survive Global Capitalism?
A New Book Explores the Issue
In his new book, Can Democracy Survive Global Capitalism?, author John Smith argues that the answer is a resounding no. Smith contends that the current global capitalist system is fundamentally incompatible with democracy, and that unless we take steps to change course, we are headed for a future of authoritarianism and inequality.
Smith's argument is based on a number of factors. First, he argues that global capitalism is inherently oligarchic. The vast majority of wealth and power in the world is concentrated in the hands of a small number of corporations and individuals. This concentration of wealth and power gives these elites a disproportionate amount of influence over the political process. As a result, they are able to shape policies in their own interests, often at the expense of the broader public.

Second, Smith argues that global capitalism is inherently unstable. The constant drive for profit often leads to crises, such as the financial crisis of 2008. These crises can have a devastating impact on the lives of ordinary people, and they can also lead to political instability.
Third, Smith argues that global capitalism is inherently environmentally unsustainable. The constant pursuit of economic growth is putting a strain on the planet's resources, and it is leading to climate change. Climate change is a serious threat to our way of life, and it is something that we cannot afford to ignore.
Smith concludes his book by arguing that we need to take steps to create a more just and sustainable economic system. He proposes a number of reforms, including increasing the minimum wage, expanding access to healthcare and education, and investing in renewable energy.
Can Democracy Survive Global Capitalism? is a timely and important book. It offers a clear-eyed assessment of the challenges facing democracy in the 21st century, and it provides a roadmap for how we can build a more just and sustainable future.
