The novel is set in Afghanistan in the 1970s and 1980s, a time of great political and social upheaval. The Soviet Union has invaded the country, and the people of Afghanistan are struggling to survive amidst the violence and chaos.
In the midst of this conflict, two young boys, Amir and Hassan, find solace in each other's friendship. Amir is the son of a wealthy Afghan businessman, while Hassan is the son of his father's servant. Despite their different backgrounds, the two boys are inseparable.
But their friendship is tested when Amir witnesses Hassan being raped by a group of bullies. Amir is terrified to intervene, and his inaction haunts him for years to come.
As the war intensifies, Amir and Hassan are forced to flee their home. They travel to Pakistan, where they live in a refugee camp. There, they meet Rahim Khan, an old friend of Amir's father.
Rahim Khan tells Amir the story of his own childhood in Afghanistan. He tells of a time when kites were all that children had. They would fly them high in the sky, and watch them dance in the wind.
"Kites were a symbol of hope," Rahim Khan says. "They were a way of forgetting the war, even for a little while."
Amir and Hassan take comfort in Rahim Khan's stories. They begin to fly kites again, and for a while, they are able to escape the horrors of the war.
But the war is always there, lurking in the shadows. And eventually, it catches up with Amir and Hassan.
"When Kites Were All We Had" is a heartbreaking and moving novel that explores the devastating impact of war on the lives of children. It is a story that will stay with you long after you've put it down.
If you are looking for a powerful and thought-provoking novel, I highly recommend "When Kites Were All We Had."
